Air conditioning, Freon, Repair a Leak or Relace Air Conditioner?

Northampton-

ASK THE HVAC EXPERT

Air conditioning contractor, freon, leak, leak detection

Q: Our Air conditioner system was not cooling and we called an air conditioner contractor out to our house to repair our A/C in Northampton Pa. Did we get ripped off?

A: A/C in Northampton PA. I cannot answer please send me more details.

Q: Our Air conditioner system was not cooling and we called our air conditioning contractor out to our house to repair our A/C in Northampton Pa. Every year they would come out and charge my system they installed. Our unit was close to ten years old. To me that is almost new. We would pay for the maintenance and a pound or two of Freon each year. This year, the tech said we needed more Freon but before adding it in we should find the leak. I had them do what he recommended, he found leak and said it would be a couple thousand for some coil above my heater. The tech made calls to his boss and they went back and forth…end result I should replace the outside and inside.

Another man from company came out and looked everything over and agreed. Now to solve my air conditioner leak, I should put in a whole new system and they would credit half of the bill from today's service of $895. to find the leak.

My husband and I are retired and could not afford to waste the Freon  leak cost and they said how much better the warranty would be with our new system. The next day they came and put a "new central Air Conditioning system" in for us and it has been cooling very nice in this heat here in Lehigh Valley.

When I told my neighbor what we did he said we got ripped off. What is your opinion?

A: First, let me thank you by providing more information.

YES! I think you have been taken advantage of for maybe many years. The reason I say this is that you paid money years ago to have air conditioner system installed professionally. It should NEVER need Freon; it is a sealed system just like a soda can. You should not of had the Freon leaks or had to replace you’re a/c!

If as you call it Freon needs to be added the install workmanship or manufactures workmanship was not up to standards.  Most of the time, leaks are from were technicians and installers join pipes. This would have been found on start up of your original installed A/C system. the company should of had higher quality standards including requiring better installation procedures. Recordings with quality checks of system in place, you never would have had any problems!

They would have been found on the front end at the time the original central air conditioning system was installed.

You should address a written letter to the owner of company X and ask why did you have a leak after an original new install? Why was it never fixed under warranty when first discovered? Do you get any credit for their improper handling of the whole Freon leak and install?

Hopefully they did a better install of your new air conditioner that you may not have really needed. Many companies will charge a very low fee for maintenance and try to find or recommend new HVAC systems.  The low fee is just to get in the door. Be careful of this also. You learned a hard lesson and may be able to recover some money through working with the local Better Business Bureau. Good Luck!

PS. I want you to download and read this consumer guide I put together choose the right contractor before you ever hire any contractor for any kind of work in your home. It does not have to be heating & Air Conditioning, ductless A/c, or heaters.

Air Conditioning Manufactures - Points To Consider When Looking For The Best Air Conditioning Prices

Many Heating and Air Conditioning manufacturers are offering Heating and Air conditioning units and they suit nearly every situation. Two most important considerations when buying a unit are its efficiency and cooling capacity, not just. air conditioning prices. Buying the biggest and most efficient system may notAir Conditioning Estimate always be the best choice as there is much more to it than that, like who is installing and and are the following manufactures procedures.

Heating and Air Conditioning Unit Overview
If you are installing a split system, some of the components will be installed indoors and others outdoors. The noisiest, heaviest and heat shedding parts such as condenser-coil and compressor are kept outdoors and evaporator coil is installed indoors. If your house has been built without ductwork, you can install a ductless air conditioning unit where a single outdoor compressor serves many smaller evaporator coils that are located indoors and each has its own box with a blower fan.
Ductless systems can also provide heat through resistance coil in wall units and they distribute the air more evenly without blocking the window. All the cooling and heating technology in heating and air conditioning unit grows from the law of thermal dynamics which states that when cold and hot spaces are separated by a medium, the transfer through this medium will be from hot to cold.
Other Aspects of Heating and Air Conditioning Unit
When buying a heating and air conditioning unit, make sure that it has adjustable thermostat, two cooling and two heating speeds, two fan speeds and energy efficient setting. There should also be an adjustable vent that allows you to aim the air. Filter should be easily accessible for removal and cleaning. Make sure that you get at least five years warranty with one year full replacement warranty.
Central Air Conditioning Energy Efficiency Ratio (ERR)
The unit should be high and you should buy the heating and air conditioning unit of suitable capacity and type with highest ERR if you have the allocations. Before buying, check the unit on the on-line rating services and do the price comparison. Check out the manufacturer's sites for any rebates or discounts being offered.
Where to Buy Heating and Air Conditioning Unit
As these units are heavy, it is best to buy them locally. Make sure that you buy from the accredited dealer who will honour the rebates and warrantees. You can also check the deals over internet and look for companies offering free home delivery. For installation of the heating and air conditioning unit, make sure to get the licensed and insured installer and check the credibility with Better Business Bureau.
If you live in PA around Reading, Lehigh Valley, or the Pocono area more homeowners are calling Maitz Home Services, as their air Conditioning company, they have BBB top rating of A+.
For heating and air conditioning repairs as well, it is advisable to call the professional. But, you can do the regular upKeep yourself such as making sure that the draining is working fine, unit is not leaking, checking the hose connections for any kind of leaks or cracks and making sure that the condensate tube is draining without impediment. How to Hire the Best Electrician and Electrical Contractors

Lehigh Valley, PA – Need an Electrician? Now the complex problem, who do you hire and trust? Who is the right electrical contractor to hire for the electrical jobs in your residence, home or business property? Any kind of electrical job inside the residence is extremely necessary and needs to be serviced by only licensed electricians. If the electrician safety procedure is bad, it can be hazardous on your behalf and your home. To select the ideal electrical service provider, you must learn what to ask for and see with your own eyes.

Decide on your electric contractor by the work that you want done. If the work is simple, a less knowledgeable electrician may be hired, and this will probably save your expenses. But if the work accommodates central wiring fluctuations, just a licensed professional electrical contractor has to be able to address it adequately. Any kind of sub-standard jobs can unleash critical damage to your property, for instance, by starting a fire. Don’t hire just an electrician with certification.

Call the electrician and inquire for them to be interviewed. Make sure that the electrical technician grabs his license and proof of insurance, otherwise do not interview at all. After the electricians visit your residence, show him the job that you wish for him to perform, so he may send you a bid. Inquire for recommendations, for the reason that former customers will suggest you their electrical technician, especially as-soon-as he has done multiple satisfactory projects. Today you can also look up on Google the company name followed by Reviews or complaints. You may be surprised what returns and you learn. Also how many reviews and what number of stars do they have with Google places.

Make certain you don't choose electric contractors just by inspecting quotes. The electrical technician who offers the most references, reviews and stars with quite a few years of professional experience is the electrical contractor you should consider. He as well must have an enjoyable charisma, since he has to be operating around the home and his presence and purposes shouldn't make you nervous. Ask to see.. Read more and download a free homeowners guide to electrical contractors at how to hire a electrician in 3 easy steps.

Do you know someone that should read this safety advise? Pass it on and help them. Would you like to post it in your website to help others? Go ahead, no problem. All I ask is keep it original text and links.

Geothermal, Energy, Cooling, Heat Pumps: FACTS

QUESTION: I moved into an old house which needs a new heating and cooling system. I have heard installing geothermal heating is a good choice today and for the future. Is geothermal energy good and does it work?Geothermal heating cooling resized 600

ANSWER: Geothermal energy-heating (heat pump) is extremely energy efficient and generally yields the lowest utility bills of any residential system. In effect, they use renewable solar energy from the sun's rays which get stored in the ground. Geothermal heat pumps also provide the most energy-efficient cooling during summer. Some models can also be combined with solar systems.

In the heating mode, a geothermal heat pumps can produce up to $5 worth of heat for each dollar on your electric bills. Unlike standard heat pumps that lose efficiency and maximum heat output as the outdoor temperature drops, the efficiency and heat output from a geothermal heat pump remains relatively constant.

During summer, a regular heat pump or central air conditioner loses efficiency and cooling output when it is hotter outdoor. Unfortunately, this is when your house requires the greatest cooling capacity. Cooling efficiencies are as high as 30 EER (energy efficiency ratio). A standard heat pump or central air conditioner is typically less than half as efficient.Keep in mind you can qualify for a geothermal tax credit.

Another summertime advantage is free hot water when the geothermal heat pump is cooling your house. Instead of exhausting the heat to the outdoor air through outdoor condenser coils, this waste heat is diverted to your water heater.

A geothermal heat pump operates similarly to a standard heat pump except it exchanges heat with the ground instead of the outdoor air. The temperature of the outdoor air can vary 30 degrees from day to night and more than 100 degrees from the coldest winter night to the hottest summer day. In contrast, the temperature several feet below the ground surface varies relatively little.

In order to capture (winter) the heat energy from the ground or exhaust (summer) the heat during summer, a long pipe is usually buried in the ground. An antifreeze/water solution, running through the pipe, acts as the heat transfer medium. If there is a pond or wells can be dug, this water can run through the heat pump heat exchangers. Many new models use Earth-friendly R410A refrigerant instead of Freon.

Since no outdoor condenser coils and fans are needed, the entire heat pump and all mechanical components are located in an indoor unit. It operates quietly and, with no outdoor fan or compressor, there is no noise to bother neighbors or your family at night. This also reduces wear and tear from constant exposure to outdoor weather and playing children. Read more on geothermal heating cooling
