What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an essential component of your home’s HVAC system. Rather than creating or destroying heat, this device transfers it from one area to another based on indoor and outdoor temperatures.

What are the Components of a Heat Pump?

Every heat pump contains five primary components:

  1. Compressor: The compressor consumes pressurized air, fills it with refrigerant so it becomes chilled, and expels the chilled air back into your home. This process repeats until the desired temperature has been reached.
  2. Condenser: The condenser takes in refrigerant gas, removes heat from it, and changes it into a liquid. This liquid then absorbs heat from the outdoor unit and releases it in the indoor unit.
  3. Evaporator: The evaporator transfers heat from inside the home to the outside air and vice versa. It also changes the refrigerant from a liquid to a gas.
  4. Refrigerant: Refrigerant transitions between liquid and gaseous states to absorb heat from the air. It starts by traveling through a compressor where its pressure increases. The now hot refrigerant travels through the condenser coil, where it releases heat outside your home. When the liquid refrigerant reaches its boiling point, it turns back into a gas and repeats the process.
  5. Fan: The fan circulates the cool and warm air from the heat pump throughout your home. It does so by drawing in warm air and blowing out cool air as well as drawing in cool air and blowing out warm air.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Heat pumps work by transferring thermal energy between two systems with different temperature levels. By operating in air conditioning and heat modes, heat pumps can both cool and warm your home to ensure year-round comfort.

In Air Conditioning Mode

When the heat pump is in air conditioning mode, it captures warm air from your home and releases it outside to lower the indoor temperature. The air conditioning mode is designed to provide cool comfort during hot summer months.

In Heat Mode

When the heat pump is in heat mode, it captures warm outside air and transfers it inside your home to increase the indoor temperature. The heat mode is designed to provide warmth during the cold winter months.
