Radiant Heating Solutions for the Modern Home
Radiant heating is nothing new. It has been around for centuries. Radiant heat systems pass heat through electric aluminum panels that are heated by radiation. They provide warmth much faster than a conventional heating system. Radiant heat is a great way to get evenly distributed heat to all the rooms in the house.
Underfloor radiant heating systems are very popular in bedrooms and baths, as well in spas and outdoor areas like around the pool and patios. Wall heating and overhead heating also works well. This is where electric aluminum panels are hung behind walls or ceilings to provide heat. You can turn them on or off with the flip of a switch as you would a light switch. Electric panels can lower your energy costs if they are left turned off when the rooms are empty.
Because radiant heating does not send out conditioned air as forced air systems do, radiant heating is often preferred by persons with allergic conditions. Radiant heat systems come in three categories:
- Electric - Coils that produce heat using electricity.
- Hydronic or water-based - Electric coil panels that are installed under the floor, ceiling or wall.
- Air-based - Panels carry heated air that helps in heat transfer.
Hydronic radiant heat systems are cost-efficient and require very little maintenance making them ideal for most uses.
Radiant Heat vs. Forced Air Heat
Radiant heat provides more consistently even temperatures and can be up to 30% more efficient than forced-air systems. Radiant floor heating is also quieter, and significantly reduces allergy issues associated with forced-air ducts.
In addition, zones are not easily programmable in forced air systems. You would have to heat the entire house to one temperature. Whereas, with underfloor heating, you can heat one-floor level only or just a few rooms.
We offer modern furnace installations if you prefer more conventional heating methods.
Is Radiant Heating Worth the Cost?
Underfloor heating is cost and energy-efficient, but the initial purchase price and installation are higher than that of traditional heating systems. Just keep in mind that underfloor heating energy will pay for itself with monthly savings to your energy bill.
If you are considering a bathroom remodel, radiant floor heating may be a wise choice since you will save on labor costs since the floor is being changed anyway. Call Maitz Home Services to discuss if radiant heat is a good option for your home. We are always happy to help and answer questions.
